A ferrule is the small rubber base found at the end of a walking stick or walking frame. They give a more stable contact with the ground and act as a shock absorber to the hand, arm and wrist.

When ferrules wear down with time and use, they will not be effective and could increase the chance of slipping or falling.

From 2022 to 2023, there were 780 emergency admissions due to falls in people aged 65 and over recorded in Medway.

It’s important to check your ferrules every 3 months for any wear and replace them regularly.

Get your ferrules checked

We're running the Walking Aids Ferrules Project which lets you get your ferrules checked and changed at a number of places across Medway.

We're also looking to get them recycled to reduce the impact on the environment and on climate change.

Why you should get your ferrule checked

Ferrules with even the slightest bit of wear can have a catastrophic consequence for the user of the equipment if they're not addressed.

The risk of falling increases as you get older, and falls are one of the biggest causes of emergency hospital admission for older adults. They can result in:

  • serious injury
  • loss of mobility
  • loss of independence
  • loss of confidence.

The prevention of falls is a national and local priority for the Medway NHS Foundation Trust.

Preventing falls is a priority for Medway Council and there are many services already in place to help protect residents from falling.
