Description

A Beanstalk reading helper is a volunteer who is trained and supported by Beanstalk.

Reading helpers work with children on a one-to-one basis, giving them consistent support to practice reading skills and increase confidence and self-esteem.

Each Beanstalk reading helper supports three children, seeing each for two 30 minute sessions a week in school.

With the emphasis on having lots of fun, together they read, play games and talk.

Benefits of becoming a Beanstalk reading helper

Beanstalk Reading Helper will get:

  • the opportunity to develop and use your skills to benefit children
  • regular opportunities to meet other volunteers
  • training and ongoing support from the Beanstalk team
  • access to books, games and activities to use in your sessions
  • travel expenses covered

We need you to:

  • engage with children on a one-to-one basis
  • listen and communicate in a patient and positive way
  • adapt to the abilities and interests of each child
  • recognise and praise children's achievements
  • be flexible and independent in a busy school environment

How it works

Your placement will be in a school within 5 miles of your home or work, supporting children between 5 and 11 years of age

You would need to commit to volunteering for a couple of hours during the school day on regular days and twice a week during term time.

Our evidence shows that regular, consistent support makes the biggest difference, most of our volunteers stay with us for a year supporting the same three children.
