KMPT Medway Secondary Care Psychological Therapy Services

Medway Secondary Care Psychological Therapy Services offer assessment and treatment to those under the care of the secondary mental health services, especially those experiencing more severe and enduring mental health problems. 

Conditions treated include:

• anxiety
• bipolar
• depression
• obsessive compulsive disorder
• personality disorders
• post-traumatic stress disorder
• schizophrenia

Psychological therapists will work with you and encourage you to find your own solutions based on a clearer understanding of yourself and your current difficulties.

Psychological therapy can be a demanding form of treatment requiring that you be honest about yourself, take responsibility for change and be willing to actively engage in treatment.

A range of services are offered. 

Therapies offered

Through specialist assessment we provide a range of psychological assessments to aid understanding.

Cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) can help overcome problems such as anxiety, depression, trauma and other long standing and severe emotional difficulties through altering patterns of thinking and behaviour.

Therapy involves up to 20 weekly sessions.

Psychodynamic therapy is used for recurring difficulties in the way people think about themselves and relate to others, or for trauma and some complex depressions.

Work normally lasts a year with weekly meetings.

Systemic family/couple therapy may be used where mental health problems affect the family or couple, exploring the patterns of relating and behaving to each other that might be contributing to your difficulties.

In group therapy you can explore your feelings and patterns of relating in a way that promotes understanding and offers the possibility of change.

Groups would usually include 6 to 12 people and meet weekly or fortnightly.

Referrals come to the Medway Secondary Care Psychological Therapy Services through the Medway Community Mental Health Team.
