KMPT Trevor Gibbens Unit (Kent Forensic Psychiatry Service)

Based at the Trevor Gibbens Unit (TGU) in Maidstone this service provides medium secure care (assessment, treatment and rehabilitation) for men and women.

The unit aims to offer a high quality service based on national strategies from the Department of Health and the Ministry of Justice.

About the units

The unit currently provides 55 medium secure beds and 10 step-down beds, over five wards.

Penshurst ward is an acute ward that specialises in the assessment and treatment of adults with complex mental health needs who require care in a medium secure setting as a response to offending and/or challenging behaviour.

Groombridge ward has 12 beds for men and specialises in the assessment and treatment of adults with complex mental health needs who require care in a medium secure setting.

Emmetts ward has 16 beds for men and specialises in the assessment and treatment of adults with complex mental health needs who require care in a medium secure setting.

Walmer ward has 12 beds for women and is an acute and rehabilitation ward. It specialises in assessing and treating adults with complex mental health needs who need care in a medium secure setting due to offending and/or challenging behaviour.

Bedgebury ward has six beds for men and four beds for women and is a 'step-down' ward. It specialises in assessing and treating adults with complex mental health needs who need care in a medium secure setting due to offending and/or challenging behaviour.

Support and projects

The Lakeside Lounge Café at the TGU is a vocational rehabilitation project providing invaluable work experience for the service users at the TGU.

The Forensic Mental Health Carer Support Worker works specifically with the families and friends of someone who is being assessed or treated by forensic mental health and learning disability services.

Referrals

Referrals may come from general adult mental health services, Prison Inreach teams and other professionals involved in the care and management of clients.
