About the Festival
The Medway Cycling Festival is open to all ages and pre-registration is not needed. Helmets must be worn.
Please note this event will be #plasticfree so please bring your own drinks.
You can also continue your day by following the marked cycle routes to The Historic Dockyard, Chatham for the Medway River Festival.
Ride the Heron Trail
Saturday 9 June 2018, 10am to 12pm start from Cliffe Memorial Hall (parking available), return by 2pm
Join the A Better Medway team to explore the Hoo Peninsula on two wheels as we kick-start the Medway Cycling Festival 2018.
The Heron Trail is a 17 mile circular cycle route which is 95% on roads, the trail is located between the River Thames to the north and the River Medway to the south.
The trail explores the Hoo Peninsula with its literary connections - Charles Dickens wrote Great Expectations and a Tale of Two Cities here. The area is also rich in maritime heritage and has a wide variety of bird life.
Sign in with our team at Cliffe Memorial Hall, get your bike checked over and pick up a route map before setting off. Support will be available along the route and medals await you at the finish.
No pre-registration needed.
Go-Ride Grass Track Racing
Sunday 10 June 10am to 1pm at Capstone Country Park
Wigmore Cycling Club hosts this fun and safe racing event for young riders, led by qualified coaches. The format of this event will be Grass Track Racing, so if you like what you’ve seen on the Velodrome at the recent Commonwealth Games, come and have a go.
You will need your own bike, helmets can be supplied.
Ages 6 to 13. Parental consent required. No booking needed.
Evans RIDE IT Sportives
Saturday 16 June 2018 from 8am
Start and finish at Medway Park, Mill Road, Gillingham, ME7 1HF
Adults from £20, children free.
Medway Council has teamed up with Evans to bring RIDE IT to the Medway Cycling Festival.
The sportive routes take 30, 50 and 80 mile tours of the Kent countryside heading east towards Faversham then south into the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
RIDE IT is a series of organised off-road sportive bikes that take place all over the UK. With over 50 events per year, RIDE IT is a fantastic way to meet like-minded cyclists and to get out and ride through stunning surroundings.
Medway Big Ride Together Family Festival
Saturday 16 June from 10am to 3pm at Riverside Country Park and The Strand
Get on your bikes and join us for a day of cycling-themed family fun for all ages as part of the Medway Cycling Festival.
Park up at Riverside and gently pedal 2 miles along the river-side cycle path to The Strand for a family festival celebrating all things wheels.
If you don't have a bike or want to head straight to The Strand. There will be plenty of activities to join in with, many with equipment provided.

- a cross country cyclocross course in conjunction with British Cycling
- a BMX pump track
- roller derby
- balance bike activities
- unicycle workshop
- arts and crafts
- face painting
There are plenty more activities taking place before you return back along the river. Free medal for every rider.

Ride Together Breeze ride
Saturday 16 June for 75 minutes (7 miles) from Riverside Country Park at 1.30pm
If you fancy a women’s only ride you can combine the Ride Together event with joining in with a Breeze ride.
Breeze rides are for free and open to women and girls accompanied by an adult.
Guided Group Rides
Get inspired by the Medway Cycling Festival and National Bike Week and join an adult Active Medway Cycle Group ride.
Cycling in a group is a great way to get into cycling. Groups are free, run all year on flat routes and, most of all, are fun. And the rides are all lead by qualified ride leaders.
- Sunday 10 June – 60 minute ride from Hoo Sports Centre at 9.45am
- Wednesday 13 June – 60 minute ride from Cliffe Woods at 6.15pm
- Thursday 14 June – 45 minute easy ride from Riverside Country Park at 10.15am
- Thursday 14 June – 60 minute ride from Rainham Library at 6.15pm
- Sunday 17 June – 75 minute ride from Gillingham (opposite The Star) at 9.45am
The rides are strictly for over 18s.
