What Medway HDRC is

The Health Determinants Research Collaboration Medway (HDRC Medway) is a partnership between Medway Council, the University of Kent, and the local community, funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR).

It aims to reduce health inequalities in Medway by ensuring that council decisions are based on evidence and research. By promoting a research-driven culture, HDRC Medway will help the council make informed choices that lead to better health outcomes for residents.

Health inequalities in Medway

Health inequalities in Medway mean that not everyone has the same chance of living a long, healthy life.

People in more deprived areas often face higher rates of chronic illness and lower life. Tackling these inequalities is essential to improving the overall wellbeing of Medway’s communities.

Health determinants and their importance

Health is not just about medical care - it’s shaped by a range of social, economic, and environmental factors known as health determinants.

Where people live, their income, education, work, and lifestyle choices all influence their physical and mental health. Understanding these factors helps councils and communities create targeted strategies that address the root causes of poor health, leading to fairer opportunities and better outcomes for everyone.
