Workplace travel plans (WTPs)
All workplaces should have an updated workplace travel plan (WTP).
The plan should assess the businesses travel patterns and needs with the focus being to promote greener and cleaner travel choices.
Like with all travel plans, it must include:
- clear and achievable aims, objectives and targets
- details of promotion and marketing
- details of monitoring and management procedures.
A WTP is an evolving document, created by the Travel Plan Coordinator and supported by a working group.

To create and support your WTP, you'll need to set up a working group.
This should be made up of:
- senior management
- employees from relevant teams
- members from the local
community.

For help with creating a WTP, you can use the Modeshift STARS online platform.
The scheme recognises businesses that have shown excellence in supporting cycling, walking and other forms of sustainable and active travel.
The Modeshift STARS online travel plan toolkit can help with:
- creating, developing and implementing travel plans
- monitoring and evaluating travel plans and initiatives
- recognising and rewarding excellence in the promotion of sustainable and active travel.
We endorse Modeshift STARS to help with creating school travel plans only.

Medway Council Workplace Travel Plan
As the largest employer in Medway, with over 5,000 employees, we're currently in the process of updating Medway Council’s Workplace Travel Plan.
This will offer practical ways for our staff to help the environment through greener travel.
