Self-build and custom housebuilding register monitoring and headline data
We're encouraged to publish headline data for each base period such as:
- the number of people and associations on the register
- the number of plots sought
- location preferences
- plot size
- type of housing intended to be built.
On 31 October 2016 new legislation was introduced which amended the Self-build and Custom Housebuilding Act 2015 and implemented Chapter 2 of the Housing and Planning Act 2016.
This places a duty on us to give suitable development permission in respect of enough serviced plots of land to meet the demand (as recorded on Medway’s self/custom build register) for self-build and custom housebuilding in the authority’s area arising in each base period.
Base periods run from 31 October to 30 October in the following year and enough suitable permissions must be granted within 3 years of the end of each base period.
Permissions can only be counted if they are clearly plots provided for self or custom housebuilding and we are satisfied that the initial owner of the home will have primary input into its final design and layout.
This page provides headline data about self or custom build applications and the register.

These are the numbers reported annually to the government and are therefore the obligation we're required to grant enough permissions for within 3 years of each base period finishing. These numbers may be different to those previously reported in the Authority Monitoring Report and other headline date publications due to some applicants later requesting to be removed from the register.
Number of applicants requesting removal from the register to date: 11.
