We’re working with SSE Energy Solutions to make our buildings more energy efficient and to reduce carbon emissions and energy costs.

Re:fit phase one

The £12 million Re:fit programme started in summer 2022. It has seen a range of retrofit measures installed across 11 council-owned buildings.

The buildings included in phase one are:

  • Chattenden Community Centre
  • Cuxton Library
  • Gillingham Library
  • Gun Wharf
  • Lordswood Library
  • Medway Crematorium
  • Medway Park
  • Rochester Adult Education
  • The Brook Theatre
  • The Central Theatre
  • Wigmore Library.

These measures include:

  • installing more energy efficient LED lighting in all buildings
    • 2,139 fittings in total which has equated to savings of 366,337kWh/85.4 tons CO2
  • updating the showers and urinals to make them more water efficient
    • Medway Park has 40 low flow showers installed. 23 waterless urinals at Medway Park, Gun Wharf and Central Theatre. These combined have a water saving of 4.932M3 (4.9 million litres)
  • replacing boilers with more energy efficient boilers and heat pumps
    • installation of 10 heat pumps. 3 public libraries complete decarbonisation, 2 from heating oil fuel and 1 from natural gas. 1 public theatre partial decarbonisation from natural gas. Savings 149,462 kWh/63.6 tons CO2. New boilers to extend combined heat and power (CHP) runtime, saving 553,587 kWh/111,8 tons CO2
  • installing new air handling unit and control at Gun Wharf to heat and cool the air more efficiently
  • installing electric vehicle (EV) charging points at Gun Wharf.

It has also included installing solar panels on 7 buildings, which have 325 kWp, generating 313,595 kWh/67.34 tons CO2.

  • Cuxton Library
  • Gillingham Library
  • Lordswood Library
  • Medway Crematorium
  • Medway Park
  • Rochester Adult Education
  • The Central Theatre.

Works are anticipated to be completed shortly.
