The photographs shown in this online exhibition were taken by students involved in the Picture Medway project. University students who study photography and social arts taught photography skills to pupils aged 11 to 14. The pupils attend Brompton Academy, Chatham Grammar School for Girls and Robert Napier School.

The students received a certificate from the university for completing the course and postcards of their work to keep.

About the Project

Our libraries were thrilled to receive funding from Art’s Council England. With this funding we ran photography workshops for pupils from local secondary schools from October 2019 to February 2020.

The project was run in partnership with the University of Kent and Medway Archives.

Medway Libraries’ Community Librarian Kate Clifford had the idea for the photography project. Kate ensured the project was Medway themed, and relatable to our young pupils. The pupils learned about the local history of Medway by attending a special session at Medway Archives Centre. They looked at the then and now illustration collections and relevant online resources that capture the past and present. This wonderful project provided our local young people with new skills and helped their mental wellbeing.
