We have been developing a junction improvement scheme to improve capacity at the A2 High Street and Mierscourt Road, Rainham.

This scheme aims to support reliable journey times and improve traffic flows at the junction.

The existing right turn facility on the A2 for Mierscourt Road can lead to traffic waiting to turn right, blocking eastbound traffic on the A2, especially if larger vehicles are involved. This can contribute to congestion and delays on this key part of the road network.

This improvement supports the work of keeping our network moving and helping to ensure efficient and reliable public transport options. As part of the scheme, the traffic signals would be upgraded to help efficient junction operation. The proposals also include widening the right turn facility, and the removal of a traffic island west of Mierscourt Road.

  • existing prohibition of stopping at any time marking to be reinstated throughout the scheme where required
  • existing island proposed to be removed to facilitate larger right turn lane facility for Mierscourt Road and enable heavy goods vehicles to turn left out of Mierscourt Road
  • proposed kerbline adjustment
  • existing yellow box junction proposed to be adjusted to suit adjusted layout
  • proposed relocation of controlled crossing point on Mierscourt Road to be closer to the junction with A2 High Street. Existing controlled crossing point to the south proposed to be removed

  • existing right turn lane facility proposed to be merged with eastbound running lane to provide a wider facility overall
  • existing street lighting lantern proposed to be replaced with LED unit to improve lighting levels at the junction
  • proposed carriageway widening to provide a better alignment through the junction
  • proposed footway link between the A2 and the bus stop on Mierscourt Road
  • existing island proposed to be reconstructed in new location to improve eastbound lane width
  • existing pay and display car park enterance proposed to be realigned and reconstructed to suit layby infill works
  • existing lighting column proposed to be relocated from outside car park enterance, to closer carriageway edge to improve lighting levels at the junction
  • proposed overrun areas within Chapel Row to narrow down junction bellmouth
  • proposed street lighting column with LED lantern to be installed to improve lighting levels at the footway widening
  • existing layby proposed to be filled in to improve footway accessibility, provide soft landscaping areas and assist buses merging back into traffic. Bus stop to be improved with raised bus boarder kerbs for easier access to buses and bus cage road marking.
