Residents and local businesses are invited to have their say on a plan to improve air quality at Four Elms Hill.

We declared a new Air Quality Management Area at Four Elms Hill, Chattenden, in October 2017 due to high levels of nitrogen dioxide in the area.

In 2019 we consulted with residents, businesses and other stakeholders to help develop a draft Air Quality Action Plan for the area to reduce emissions from cars, heavy goods vehicles (HGVs), light goods vehicles and buses.

The draft plan outlines the actions we propose to take to help improve air quality including promoting low emission transport and travel alternatives, freight and delivery management and traffic management. This includes increasing the availability of electric vehicle charging infrastructure and encouraging the use of public transport.

Residents and local businesses are invited to have their say and their responses will help finalise the action plan.

The consultation opened on Monday, 7 March and the deadline for responses is Sunday, 24 April.

It's important we take action to reduce emissions

Cllr Jane Chitty, Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder for Planning, Economic Growth and Regulation, said: “We have continued to monitor the air quality at Four Elms Hill since declaring an Air Quality Management Area and this will be reinforced with the emerging Action Plan. It is important that we take action to reduce emissions and improve air quality across Medway as it affects the health of our residents, especially those with pre-existing health conditions. We will do what we can to improve air quality and consequently, their quality of life. I would encourage residents and businesses to have their say and help shape the action plan. We have made sure that the consultation is accessible to all residents, and I would encourage those without access to the internet to request a paper copy.”

Have your say

Residents without internet access are advised to call 01634 333333 to arrange for paper copies of the consultation and survey to be sent to them. Residents can also email the environmental protection team to request a paper copy on env.planning@medway.gov.uk.
