A better Medway
Published: Thursday, 19th January 2023

Residents of Medway have walked, skipped and jumped the entire distance around the world – an astounding 24,901 miles – as part of the Medway Can campaign.

The campaign aims to promote the benefits of living a healthy lifestyle and encourage everyone who lives, works and learns in Medway to get moving, and since launching in May 2022 the people of Medway have truly stepped up to the challenge.

From activity days at schools including Oaklands Primary School and the Academy of Woodlands, to inclusive sports days and exercise classes – there’s been something for everyone to get involved with.

To celebrate this amazing achievement, join us in Medway city centre on Friday, 27 January for a day filled with healthy food, fitness and fun.

Medway Can will be taking over an area at the Pentagon shopping centre, in Chatham, from 10am to 4pm, where it will be hosting its Move Too event.

Those who attend the event will be able to watch live cooking demonstrations in collaboration with Medway food businesses, where chefs will be cooking delicious healthy dishes and providing samples to enjoy.

Following the cooking demonstrations, ingredient goody bags will be provided containing low-cost, healthy and tasty recipes, along with three ingredients so residents can try their hand at making one of the dishes at home.

There will also be an area where people can challenge themselves to ‘move a mile’, or as far as they comfortably can.

The Royal Engineers are kindly providing their physical training instructors to help motivate and educate and there will be exercise equipment including treadmills, upright bikes and a recumbent bike for those with limited mobility.

In addition, there will also be a children’s area so they can also join in the fun. The Medway Can campaign supports our ambition for Medway to become even more child-friendly.

Health experts will also be on hand at the event to answer any questions around health, diet and exercise people may have.

Fantastic achievement

Cllr David Brake, Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder covering Public Health, said: “It’s a fantastic achievement for Medway to have moved around the entire world, and I’d like to thank everyone who took part and rose to the challenge. This ambitious campaign has really highlighted what’s possible when everyone works together towards a common goal.

“We are also pleased to continue work on the Medway Can campaign, which has gone from strength to strength. This event is a fantastic opportunity for residents to get involved in an initiative to become healthier, more active and move a mile. Residents can also find out more about the benefits of healthy eating – whilst proving it doesn’t have to break the bank.”
