History will be brought to life at Medway’s spectacular heritage attractions this summer.

Take a trip back in time and explore Medway’s rich history at Rochester Castle and Upnor Castle with some extra special visitors who will tell tales about significant historic moments.

The 79th Cameron Highlanders Regiment of Foote Re-enactment will take place at Upnor Castle on Saturday, 22 July. The Highlanders will be showing off their skills with live demonstrations and musket drills.

Visit Rochester Castle on Sunday, 23 July to discover how they made books in the 14th Century – the last golden age of hand-written books! On Sunday, 30 July, find out what life in the castle was like during the siege – listen to the childhood experiences of a child who was confined in the castle during the siege.

A Knight Templar will then visit the castle on Sunday, 6 August to dispel myths and legends and on Sunday, 13 August visitors can hear all about the craft and abilities honed by a master mason.

Find out how Isabella, the wife of Edward II, led an invasion against England with Roger Mortimer on Sunday, 20 August.

Then, on Sunday, 27 August, learn how Henry VIII, while in dispute with the Pope, the fate of the country’s 800 priories, monasteries, and abbeys up into the air.

Children can also take part in free exciting trails at Medway’s heritage attractions this summer to win our prized button badges – there’s a different one to collect at each site.

Take part in the Knights Code of Chivalry Trail at Rochester Castle, the Soldiers and Gunpowder Trail at Upnor Castle, the Short Brothers Plane Trail at The Guildhall Museum, Find Tudor Ted at Eastgate House and complete the Grand Master’s Coat of Arms Trail at Temple Manor.

If you complete all five trails, you’ll be given a £5 voucher to spend in any of our gift shops. The trails start from Saturday, 22 July until Saturday, 2 September. Normal admission fees apply.

Bringing Medway's rich history to life

I am delighted that our extremely popular summer trails are also returning and we look forward to welcoming children and families to Rochester Castle, The Guildhall Museum, Temple Manor, Eastgate House and Upnor Castle this summer. I would encourage residents to come along and discover the history that’s right on their doorstep."
