Medway’s Cabinet members have pledged to take steps to help people feel less isolated and more connected.
During last night’s Cabinet meeting (Tuesday, 16 January), the Leader of Medway Council, Vince Maple, along with portfolio holders signed up to the Medway Together pledge in support of the new campaign - and residents, schools and businesses are being encouraged to join them.
Everyone feels lonely sometimes, and it is estimated one in five people from all age groups in Medway often or always feel lonely.
Loneliness can affect mood and behaviour, but it can be hard to spot, as people might appear to be coping on the outside but feel isolated inside.
Loneliness is a normal human emotion which is often the result of life changes like unemployment, bereavement and relationship breakdown. Sustained and chronic loneliness can also have serious impacts on mental and physical health - increasing the risk of depression and anxiety, heart disease, stroke, and dementia.
Make a difference to someone’s life
Cllr Teresa Murray, Medway Council’s portfolio holder covering public health, said: “It is vital we do what we can to help those feeling isolated within our communities, but it’s not difficult to make a big difference to someone’s life. Just by offering a bit of time and support you can help transform someone’s day and make them feel more connected.
“There are also dozens of support groups and clubs across Medway that can help offer a lifeline to those who feel isolated. If you’re feeling lonely, or know someone who is, please take the Medway Together pledge, and find out about the support on offer.”
Make a #MedwayTogether pledge to reach out to someone in your community today and together we can help people feel more connected.
You can make a pledge, large or small, by either completing a postcard at events and community groups, or complete the online form.
