Medway’s Climate Response Team have teamed up with Active Medway to create the first-ever Medway Climate Ride on Saturday, 1 June.
The mini ‘Tour de Kent’ between two iconic landmarks will see cyclists start at Rochester Cathedral and make their way over to Canterbury Cathedral.
The event supports Kent Country Council’s Cycle for Summer campaign, which is being championed by Greener Kent, Explore Kent, Kent Connected and Active Kent & Medway. The aim is to bring people together to celebrate cycling, talk about climate issues, and most importantly soak in the amazing views and have fun.
The route is around 34miles and as well as picturesque views of the river Medway, it will take cyclists across quiet country lanes, meandering streets, shared cycle paths, cobbled high streets.
Riders will meet at 9.30am at Rochester Cathedral where they will be welcomed by Canon Dr Gordon Giles who will say few words about the climate emergency. They will then set off at 9.45am to make their way to Canterbury Cathedral for some well-earned tea and cake.
Cllr Simon Curry, Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder covering Climate Change, said: “This is a wonderful idea, which promotes the important topic of climate change and the benefits of active travel. It also gives people an opportunity to take in some of the amazing views and landscapes we are lucky to have on our doorstep. At 34miles long, it is probably one for seasoned cyclists – but there are also plenty of other cycle routes in Medway for you to try out!”
Riders will be supported on the journey by the Active Medway team. Please note that riders will need to make their own way home. Currently, trains are due to run from Canterbury to Medway as normal on the day.
