We are delighted to inform you that the A228 Frindsbury Hill in Strood is due to reopen ahead of schedule on Friday, 14 June.
The road was closed from the Sans Pareil roundabout to Brickfield View to allow construction works for the entrance to the new Maritime Academy to be completed.
Once Frindsbury Hill is open, all traffic management measures which were in place will be removed. This includes the reintroduction of the traffic restrictions on Canal Road which were temporarily lifted whilst these works took place.
Motorists should be aware that they will no longer be able to use Canal Road to access the A2 from Medway City Estate. Enforcement of these restrictions will restart from Saturday, 15 June.
Thank residents for their patience and understanding
Adam Bryan, Medway Council’s Director of Place, said: “I am really pleased these works are finishing ahead of schedule, and I would like to thank residents for their patience and understanding. We have been able to open the road earlier than planned as the contractors have worked very closely with us, so I would like to thank them as well. This work was essential to help the new Maritime Academy, which is expected to open in September and provide more than 1,000 secondary school places, open on time.”
Pedestrian crossing
The new pedestrian crossing on Frindsbury Hill will not be in operation yet as anti-skid surfacing still needs to be laid.
This work is scheduled to be completed over three nights, from Tuesday, 2 July to Friday, 5 July. This work will be carried out under temporary traffic lights between 8pm and 5am.
In the meantime, pedestrians can still use the existing crossing point.
Bus diversions
A number of bus diversions were also put in place during these works. Bus operators have been informed of the road reopening, and services will return to normal from Saturday, 15 June.
