Town Hall Gardens is in the heart of Chatham behind the Brook Theatre. The gardens have many naval history links. They were used as a graveyard before becoming a formal public garden in 1905.

Funding for improvements comes from developer contributions at Whiffens Avenue car park (Garrisons Point).

Consultation

Following consultations in 2022 and 2023, we developed an improved proposal for Town Hall Gardens based on the feedback.

Improvements so far

  • tree works - to open views in the garden and to remove trees that were in poor condition
  • improved the play area - completely refurbished with 2 new multi-play units, swings, springers, a carousel, seating and floor graphics, all inspired by castles and dragons. There are now more play facilities and for a wider age range.

Current improvements

The next stage of improvements will be to the existing footpaths and entrance points in the gardens.

These include:

  • resurfacing a large amount of footpaths in the garden
  • creating a new footpath with steps at the corner of Rope Walk and Whiffens Avenue, which is currently used as a popular cut-through to the Great Lines Heritage Park
  • a new pedestrian and maintenance vehicle entrance at the top of Whiffens Avenue
  • a formal entrance to the gardens at King Street
  • installing more benches.

These works are scheduled to start from Tuesday 26 August 2025 and will last around 10 weeks. During this time, some footpaths and entrances may be temporarily closed and diversions placed.

Residents who gave their email addresses in the consultation will be kept up to date.
