Strood Town Centre Improvement

Strood Town Centre Improvement Project

In 2015 Medway Council successfully secured £9 million from the Government's Local Growth Fund through the South East Local Enterprise Partnership to improve Strood town centre.

In 2016 the draft proposals for the improvements were presented to the public and key stakeholders as part of a consultation process. The results of the consultation are detailed in the Final Strood Draft Action Plan Consultation Report. These are the Strood proposals which were consulted on.

The project seeks to improve:

  • journey time reliability trough the town centre
  • facilities for pedestrians
  • the look and feel of the town centre to encourage more people to spend time there

The transformation project aims to boost economic growth, provide new jobs in the town and create a location where people are proud to live, work and visit.

Strood town centre improvements

Phase One: Commercial Road Car Park

Key Features

  • The car park will be resurfaced with high quality materials
  • The pedestrian route through the car park will be realigned with Tolgate Lane, improving the link from the High Street to the retail park
  • New seating, planting and improved lighting will be installed

These works will transform the existing car park and market space at Commercial Road, creating a new and improved market site.

Future Phases

Detailed design is underway on the next phases of the project and will continue to be developed and implemented during 2018-19. Future phases will include enhancements to pedestrian routes, cycling facilities and improvements to the road layout in the town centre to reduce congestion.

Works Update

Strood Train Station

The project has also contributed match funding towards the new railway station building at Strood, which was delivered by Southeastern and opened in 2017 as part of the National Station Improvement Programme.

Phase One: Commercial Road Car park

Works are due to begin on this work week commencing Monday, 19 February 2018. It is anticipated that the works will completed within the year.

To allow for the improvement works to take place, Strood market will be closed temporarily. The last Tuesday market will be held in Strood on 13 February 2018 and the last Saturday market will be held on 17 February 2018.

We will post updates regarding the expected reopening dates of the market here and on our Medway Markets page

  • It is the intention to maintain access between Tolgate Lane and Commercial Road and High Street, throughout the works.
  • The existing walkway in Commercial Road car park or a suitable alternative will be provided as works progress. Details will be confirmed at a later date.
  • Disabled parking will continue to be provided within Commercial Road car park. The precise location may change as works progress. On-site signage will be in place to advise drivers.

Thank you for continuing to support local businesses during this time. Please bear with us, we will do everything possible to minimise the disruption during these works.
