Signing up

To sign up for My Council Tax Online follow these instructions:

  1. visit My Council Tax Online
  2. select 'sign up'
  3. select whether your bill is addressed to a person or business
  4. create a name for your online account
  5. select 'Council Tax' as the service you're signing up for
  6. enter your name (see more about how to enter your name)
  7. enter your Council Tax payment reference number (also known as account number)
  8. enter the property postcode (this must include a space, for example ME4 4TR)
  9. create your username (this is not case-sensitive)
  10. create a password (this cannot be the same as your username)
  11. open the email we have sent you with a link to verify your email address and activate your online account
  12. check your junk or spam folders if you do not receive the email in your main inbox
  13. select the link in your email to complete registration (if you cannot click on the link, copy and paste the full hyperlink into your browser address bar).

How to enter your name when signing up

Your Council Tax bill will only show an initial for your first and middle names, for example ‘R A’. However, to sign up, you must enter your first name in full. For example, ‘Rebecca’.

The system will not allow you to sign up if you enter anything different, for example, ‘R’, ‘R A’ or 'Becky'.

Enter your surname as it appears on your Council Tax bill.

Signing in

To sign into your account, visit My Council Tax Online and follow these instructions:

  1. select ‘Sign in’
  2. enter your username and password
  3. open your email from us (you are emailed a one-time security code every time you sign into your account)
  4. check your junk or spam folders if you do not receive the email in your main inbox
  5. select the 'Generate code’ button and enter the security code that was emailed to you.

The code is only valid for 15 minutes. You can get another code sent to you by selecting the ‘Resend code’ link.

Viewing your bill

Once you're signed into your account, to view your bill:

  1. select ‘Bills and payment plans’ from the main menu
  2. select ‘View bills and recovery notices’
  3. select 'View link' against the bill you wish to view (this will download it on your device).

Once you're signed into your account, to register for paperless billing:

  1. go to the main menu
  2. select 'Register for paperless billing'.

Receiving emails

Emails from My Council Tax Online may be in your junk or spam folder. Mark the emails from us as 'not junk' or 'not spam' to ensure they go to your main inbox in future.

Sometimes links in our emails may not be clickable. This is due to some email provider’s settings.

If you cannot open a link from your email, copy and paste the full hyperlink into your browser address bar.
