Empty property
A long-term empty home is any privately owned home which has been empty for 6 months or more.
Derelict property
A derelict building is a property in a bad state of repair because it has not been used or lived in for a long time.
How we can help
It's up to the owner to look after their property. However, if a home is empty or derelict, we can help fix the problem.
We work with owners to find the best ways to bring empty properties back into use.
Many properties are empty for a reason. We appreciate that renovations and sales take time. We'll rarely need to get involved in these circumstances.
Our focus is on providing advice if you want to do something with the empty property. We want to help guide you through the range of options and support available.
This way, you can select the solution that is right for you and your property.
We also look at problematic properties and cases where the owner is not returning a property to use.
We'll investigate and contact the owner to try to bring the property back into use. Enforcement powers may be used, where appropriate.
Bringing an empty or derelict property back into use can:
- save the owner money
- generate rental income
- offer a lump sum through sale
- provide a much needed home whilst being improved.
Report a property
To report a property you believe to be empty or derelict, you can use our report a derelict or empty building online form.
What happens next
We will:
- arrange a visit
- investigate your report
- contact the owner
- take enforcement action (where appropriate).
