We know that owning a pet can be great, but we must also consider when pets may cause a nuisance to residents. Our pet policy focuses on responsible pet ownership.

Animal welfare

We encourage all pet owners to register with a local vet. This is to make sure pets have access to medical care if they need it.

The RSPCA have advice on:

  • caring for animals
  • finding a vet
  • pet care
  • pet bereavement (death of a pet).

Emergency care

It's important to have a plan for emergencies. This may include arrangements with friends or family to take care of your pets if you're away or in hospital.

You can complete the RSPCA Emergency Pet Care Form to tell someone coming to an emergency that pets are inside and who to contact.

Medway Housing Services cannot make arrangements for pets in emergencies.

Microchipping and neutering

Our policy explains that pets must be neutered and microchipped.

Legally, cats and dogs must be microchipped.

The law was passed in 2014 for dogs, and June 2024 for cats.

Cats Protection offer a means-tested neutering scheme for people who need help neutering their cat. The neutering vouchers contribute towards the cost of the operation.
