Before you register for social housing
Social housing provides affordable accommodation to people on low incomes. To be eligible for social housing you must have some housing need, for example your current accommodation is not suitable for you or a member of your household.
You can register for social housing in Medway through Kent Homechoice. Before you apply, you will need to complete a pre-assessment to check you’re eligible for social housing.
You’ll need the following information to complete the pre-assessment:
- ages of the members of your household
- your salary details
- total amount of benefits that you receive, including housing benefit
- any other income, including savings
- total of any money that you owe
- total amount of any current or former owed rent
Complete the pre-assessment questionnaire
Medway Council Housing Allocations Policy 2019
Due to demand for social housing being higher than the supply of accommodation, it is important that our Housing Allocations Policy reflects the needs of the people in Medway.
The Housing Allocations Policy determines how we manage our Housing Register and allows accommodation to be allocated to households in the most need.

Update to our Housing Allocations Policy
To ensure that our Housing Allocations Policy is compliant with legislation, we have made changes to the local connection criteria for:
- previous and current members of the Armed Forces and their partners
- care leavers under the age of 26
- those fleeing domestic abuse.
For more information on these changes, email rehousing@medway.gov.uk.
We'll publish a new Housing Allocations Policy in late 2026 to 2027.
