Appealing a decision

If you have been refused assistance with transport to a school you can appeal against this decision to the School Admissions and Transport Manager, known as a first stage review.

If this appeal is not successful, you can appeal to councillors. This is known as a second stage appeal.

Alternative Medway schemes

Medway Youth Pass Scheme

The Medway Youth Pass Scheme entitles all young people, from the age of 5, who live in Medway to pay half the adult fare (child fares already apply in the afternoons for under 16s) when traveling on any local bus service.

The journeys must start in Medway and can be to any destination in Medway or Kent, as long as any changes of bus are in Medway. This pass is not valid on the subsidised yellow buses run by Medway Council or companies who offer a child fare.

If you are interested in this scheme, please visit the Medway Youth Pass Scheme.

MY Bus scheme

We provide the Yellow bus scheme that supplies school buses for young people living in certain parts of Medway travelling to the following Medway secondary schools:

  • Chatham Grammar School for Boys
  • Chatham Grammar School for Girls
  • Greenacre Academy
  • Rainham Mark Grammar School
  • Rainham School for Girls
  • Strood Academy
  • The Howard School
  • Walderslade Girls School
  • The Victory Academy.

If you’re interested in this service, please contact us on 01634 333 455 or visit the MY Bus Scheme.

16+ Scheme

All school leavers are now expected to continue in education or find work, however local councils are not required to continue to provide free transport. A student is eligible if they are between 16 and 19-years-old at the start of their course and live in Medway.

Students can apply for a discounted bus or rail season ticket, which is charged termly or annually depending on preference.

You can apply for this scheme by filling in an application form, which can be collected from:

  • your child’s school office
  • Medway community hubs in Chatham, Gillingham and Rochester
  • Strood and Rainham contact point and library.

Bus pass costs are indicated on the application form, however for rail quotes, please email us at schooltransport@medway.gov.uk stating your child’s name, the boarding and destination stations and the dates the pass will be needed.

Please note that rail passes issued through us cannot be used on the high-speed train line between Gravesend and St. Pancras International and have to be collected from our offices at Gun Wharf.
