After you apply

After you have submitted your form, we will contact your references and complete a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) background check.

You will need to attend an appointment to confirm your identity (ID) and provide 3 forms of relevant ID from GOV.UK DBS check documents. If you could not upload an image, you will need to bring this with you.

You can book an appointment by:

You will be asked to complete an up-to-date chaperone guidance session that lasts approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. We will send this to you by email.

After the guidance session you will be sent a form by email to check:

  • your understanding of the session
  • the roles of a chaperone
  • the responsibilities of a chaperone.

New DBS checks

Once we have checked your proof of identity, you will need to complete a DBS form. You will be sent a link to the website about how to access this form.

DBS checks through the update service

If you’re signed up to the DBS update service, we’ll need to see a copy of your original DBS certificate. We’ll then check your ID and complete the DBS check.

Once approved

A chaperone licence is valid for 3 years from the issue date of the DBS check. It’s the chaperone’s responsibility to re-apply at the end of the 3 years.

We may be able to accept existing DBS certificates if we have issued them at Medway Council and if they are within this 3-year period.
