Apply for a memorial bench on a highway
You can apply for a memorial bench to be placed on a footway on our highway land. Highway memorial benches are dealt with by our highways team.
Choosing your location
You need to check your location is within the highway boundary using Medway Maps.
To do this you'll need to select:
- map features in the top left
- the drawing layer check box at the top of the list
- highways
- the drop down next to highways and select adoption status.
You'll then be able to:
- zoom in using the plus icon in the bottom right of your screen
- click and drag the screen to navigate around the map.
The areas covered by the highway are coloured grey and green.
To see the grey highlighted areas more clearly, select the map fader at the bottom right of the map screen.
If you're unable to use Medway Maps
We ask you to provide a road name and attach photos of your prefered location when you submit your application. This will help us to assess your requests more accurately.
You can include the photos:
- within your application
- attach them separately when emailing
- when uploading your form to us.
Restrictions
There may be restrictions in place at certain locations. Each application needs to be reviewed and approved by our highways team to ensure the safety and accessibility of the highway for all users after the bench is installed.
Cost of a memorial bench
The cost of your memorial bench will depend on its size, style and location.
Benches on the highway are restricted to the Lowther wooden design. The price of the bench starts at £1,156.28 excluding VAT.
There may be additional installation costs, which will be determined by the location of the bench. Every request will be assessed and quoted separately.
Memorial plaques for your bench
We can arrange a small memorial plaque that can be attached to your seat for an additional cost. The number of letters on the plaque is limited to 150 characters.

What happens next
After the Highway Operations team confirm your location there is a £215 inspection and production of quotation fee which is due at the the time of application and is non refundable.
We'll contact you to confirm this payment once we receive your application and carry out any prelimiary checks.
