A better Medway

These free courses will give attendees the skills and confidence to help others move forward from a problem or unhealthy behaviour.

The courses have been designed by Medway Council and Kent County Council, and cover physical and mental health and general wellbeing. 

Our trainers draw on techniques from Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Brief Solution Focussed Therapy.

Making Every Contact Count, or MECC, is broken up into three 'tiers' of training, starting with a two hour introductory course open to everyone. 

The subsequent tiers run over one or two days and are designed for professional people like social workers, midwives, nurses, housing officers, youth workers, and pharmacy staff.

Tier 1

Introduction to Making Every Contact Count and local public health services

Who it's for: This course is open to everyone. It is recommended for those having direct contacts with members of the public where opportunities to signpost to local public health services are likely to arise.

Duration: 2 hours

Tier 2

Making Every Contact Count with Motivational Interviewing Techniques

Who it's for: This course is recommended for housing officers, children's centre staff, community nurses, youth workers, pharmacy staff. This training will be delivered across Medway and Kent.

Duration: 1 day

Summary: It will show you how to use your listening skills to assess a person’s readiness for change, and use open-ended questions and affirmations to improve your conversations about health behaviours.

Tier 3

Making Every Contact Count using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) techniques

Who it's for: This course is recommended for professionals who have frequent contact with service users and are likely to talk to them about their health and wellbeing, such as midwives, social workers, health visitors, early help case workers.

Duration: 2 days

Summary: Move your client on from their problem by getting them to focus on their strengths. This approach positions the client as the expert on their own life and provides you with the tools to help them discover solutions.
