A better Medway

The sun is our main source of vitamin D, but as we move into the winter months sun in Medway can be in short supply.

We need vitamin D as it works with calcium and phosphorus for healthy bones, muscles and teeth.

Vitamin D plays an important role in protecting muscle strength, preventing rickets, osteomalacia (softening of the bones) and preventing falls.  Since the main source of vitamin D is sunlight the Department of Health recommends taking a supplement during the winter months.

A supplement of 10 micrograms is recommended and you should consider vitamin D from other supplement sources (for example Cod Liver oil).  You can aim to include plenty of vitamin D in your diet as well from oily fish, egg yolk, meat and milk.  Some breakfast cereals and yogurts are also fortified with added vitamin D.  If you are concerned that you aren’t getting enough vitamin D, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
