To improve your local area, they have:

  • offered free crime prevention advice and products to help secure your home
  • removed waste and encouraged people to recycle
  • removed graffiti
  • installed an extra CCTV camera.

If we've helped you, we’d love to hear from you.

Take our Safer Streets survey.

Safer Streets project

We have been working to prevent crime in the Gillingham area to help residents feel safer in their community. We have been providing households with extra security measures and environmental changes to encourage residents to take pride of their area and love where they live.

How we’ve supported you

Under the Safer Streets initiative, police officers, police community support officers (PCSOs) and community engagement wardens have been working in the area and visiting homes during 2020 and 2021. They have offered free crime prevention products, free home security surveys and crime prevention advice to help secure your home.

We have been offering crime prevention products for properties and helping residents understand how they can better protect themselves, such as:

  • door chains
  • door viewers
  • access alarms
  • shed packs (alarms, locks and signage)
  • forensic marking kits
  • anti-climb defensive strips

Funding was available for residents unable to install the crime prevention products themselves. There was also more rapid response CCTV cameras, street bins and several environmental projects including street scene improvement and recycling engagement.

Funding and duration of the Safer Streets project

The Kent Police and Crime Commissioner was awarded money by the Home Office through the Safer Streets Fund to help improve the security in the area and the environment.

The funding provides a real opportunity for partner agencies through the Medway Community Safety Partnership and The Medway Task Force to work together in the community to help tackle crime, anti-social behaviour and help keep Gillingham residents safe.

The project ran until March 2021, for further details visit Community Safety in Medway.

Area

The funding has been secured for north Gillingham.
