We are set to launch a new optional service for households which present additional garden waste each week.

From Monday, 2 June households across Medway will still be able to present either one 240litre brown wheeled bin, or two reusable brown sacks if their property isn’t suitable for a wheeled bin, for free every week. However, from this date no additional waste will be collected unless a subscription is held.

Those that regularly have additional garden waste will be able to opt in to a new service for £40 per year which will allow them to present two brown bins each week.

Subscriptions for the new service will launch on Tuesday, 13 May, ahead of the service launching in June.

Those that choose to sign up to the new additional garden waste service will receive their permit and welcome pack through the post. The permit will need to be fixed to your additional garden waste bin.

Any household which also requires an additional brown bin will receive it within three weeks of signing up.

All Medway residents will still be able to book a trip to take garden waste to Medway’s three Household Waste and Recycling Centres.

Cllr Simon Curry, Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder for Climate Change and Strategic Regeneration, said: “We are proud of Medway’s fantastic weekly bin collection service, and the fact that we are one of the few places in the country that still offer a free garden waste collection service too.

“This change won’t impact most residents, however, those that do produce more garden waste than average will be able to sign up to this new convenient service.”

The new optional service will be available for households where streets are suitable for a wheeled bin.

Residents in flats will also be able to opt in. They can apply for a brown bin if they have a private garden they maintain, or the landlord, management agent or resident group can subscribe for one on behalf of their development.
