Our building regulations are in place to ensure health and safety, conserve energy and provide access and facilities for disabled people. Building control in Medway is managed by the STG Building Control Partnership.

STG Building Control Partnership

STG Building Control Partnership provides services on behalf of four councils in Kent: Canterbury, Gravesham, Medway and Swale. Their team of highly qualified building control surveyors and administration officers provide impartial advice and help.

The partnership ensures that building work is carried out in line with building regulations. This is done by checking the plans and details submitted with an application and then inspecting the construction work as it progresses on site.

Report a dangerous structure

The building control team are responsible for making sure that buildings and structures in the authorities' area do not present a danger to people in or near them.

A structure might be dangerous as a result of vehicle impact, lightning strike, poor building works or neglect.

How to report a dangerous structure

We operate a service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If you think that a building or structure is dangerous or unstable and may pose a threat to public safety please call us.

We aim to arrive at the site within two hours of receiving a call, to assess the situation and decide on the best course of action.

Approved inspectors' insurance issues

In June 2019, seven independent building inspectors (approved inspectors) operating in the Medway area were unable to renew their public liability insurance. The insurance cover indemnifies the approved inspector for claims arising from the conduct of their building control function.

We're aware of emails issued by agents acting on behalf of one of the larger former approved inspectors. These emails offer customers extra information held on their properties if they pay £150.

The Local Authority Building Control body (LABC), carried out trials paying the extra sum. It received no new records or extra information to that already held by, and available from, STG Building Control Partnership.

If you need building control details on your property, you should not pay the extra £150 fee. You should contact STG Building Control Partnership first.
