Strood Town Centre Project

The project aims to improve:

  • the reliability of journey times through the town
  • pedestrian facilities
  • the look and feel of the town to encourage more people to visit

We are also aiming to boost economic growth, provide new jobs in the town and create a place that people are proud to live, work and visit.

The improvements are to take place across the town centre in phases, with completion anticipated to be in early 2019.

Phase 1: Commercial Road Car Park and Tolgate Lane

The first phase of the project to transform the existing car park at Commercial Road is substantially complete.

The key features of the Commercial Road car park include:

  • the resurfacing of the car park and Tolgate Lane with high quality materials
  • a pedestrian route through the car park that has reinforced and improved the link from the high street to the retail park
  • new seating and planting and improved lighting (improved lighting is yet to come)

Strood Market has now returned to Commercial Road car park and is now able to take full advantage of the new facilities and improved space.

Commercial Road improvements

Phase 2: Gun Lane

Two new pedestrian islands with dropped kerbs and tactile paving have been constructed, one near Byrant Road, and one outside the Salvation Army Centre.

Further works in Gun Lane, located at its junction with High Street and North Street will be carried out at a later date with other phases of the scheme.

Phase 3: Station Road junction with Commercial Road

Work has started to provide a larger, more accessible pedestrian island at this junction.  Further improvements will be made later this year, including:

  • the planting of trees and high quality paving materials to enhance the area
  • installation of extra lighting effects to create a gateway feature to tie in with future phases

Phase 4: Commercial Road with Knight Road

Alterations to improve traffic flow at this junction started on 18 August 2018 and has already seen the removal of traffic signals in preparation for replacement zebra crossings.

The dedicated left-turn lane has also been removed and the road layout changed so that there is one ahead lane for westbound traffic and one lane for Knight Road. Other key improvements include:

  • resurfacing the footways
  • upgrading the signalised pedestrian crossing by Commercial Road car park.

Phase 5: High Street

Works start on 24 September.  Footway kerbs and paving will be replaced, the guard rail will be removed and traffic signs and road markings will be refreshed.  Improvements will be made to the following crossing points to improve pedestrian safety:

  • High Street, Gun Lane and Cuxton Road junction – upgraded crossing point
  • High Street/Commercial Road junction - relocated pedestrian crossings from the central island to provide wider, safer facilities
  • High Street/North Street junction - removal of traffic signals and replacement with a standalone zebra crossing on North Street and a signal crossing on High Street.
  • provision of a signal crossing point at Wimpy and removal of the signal crossing at Iceland, as part of the existing signal junction.

Works to resurface the carriageway, construct raised-table traffic calming features and upgrade the street lighting will be undertaken later this year.

Future phases

The design for the next phases of the project will continue to be developed and executed during 2018 to 2019.

Proposals include:

  • improvements to pedestrian routes
  • planting of more shrubs and trees
  • new and refurbished bus stops
  • more seating areas
  • new road surfacing within the town centre
  • cycling facilities
  • further improvements to the road layout at Cuxton Road and Station Road to reduce congestion

We will continue to update you with more detailed information on the next phases on this page and in the Strood Community Hub when it becomes available.

Launch of Strood market

On 28 August 2018, we celebrated the launch of Strood market and the completion of the Local Growth Fund improvement works at Commercial Road car park and Tolgate Lane.

The launch included a range of activities from face painting and street entertainment, to construction machine simulators.

Access during the works

Thank you for supporting local businesses while works are carried out. During this time we will continue to do everything we can do minimise disruption.

It is likely that temporary signals will be necessary when changes are being made to the current road layout.  This is to ensure the safety of all road users during the transition period.  We will do everything we can to keep this to a minimum and thank you for your patience.

We have previously held consultations about the proposed improvements. View the results in the Final Strood Draft Action Plan Consultation Report.

Strood Train Station

The project has also provided funding towards the new railway station building at Strood, which was delivered by Southeastern and opened in 2017 as part of the National Station Improvement Programme.
