Strood Town Centre project
The project aims to improve:
- the reliability of journey times through the town
- pedestrian facilities
- the look and feel of the town to encourage more people to visit
We are also aiming to boost economic growth, provide new jobs in the town and create a place that people are proud to live, work and visit.
A new leaflet was delivered in August 2019 to 22,000 businesses and residents in Strood providing an update on the planned improvements.
Work is now significantly complete. There is still some work to do to replace broken paving slabs.
The pedestrian crossing connecting Tolgate Lane with the retail park is also due to be upgraded.
Resin surfacing will be applied to the bases of trees and the new island opposite Starbucks in February.
We expect these improvements to be completed by the end of March 2020.
Architectural lighting to St Nicholas Church
We have submitted an application for Planning and Heritage approval. If the application is successful, the lighting will be installed in Spring 2020.
Architectural lighting to railway arches on North Street, Station Road and A2, High Street
This is subject to approval from Network Rail. Installation will be completed in Spring 2020.
Thank you for your continued patience and support for local businesses while works are carried out.
Business compensation is not considered
The works are intended to boost the regeneration of Strood and the attractiveness of Strood for residents and businesses.
This is seen as a benefit to all businesses located in Strood, the advantages of which are likely to outweigh any short-term inconvenience. For this reason, Medway is not considering compensation to businesses.
We have previously held consultations about the proposed improvements. View the results in the Final Strood Draft Action Plan Consultation Report.
Strood Train Station
The project has also provided funding towards the new railway station building at Strood, which was delivered by Southeastern and opened in 2017 as part of the National Station Improvement Programme.
