The Police and Criminal Evidence Act requires an appropriate adult be present when a juvenile (aged 10 to 17) or vulnerable adult (due to a mental health or learning disability) is arrested.
Normally, this would be a parent, carer or someone known to the individual, but sometimes this is not possible and Young Lives Foundation volunteers are called upon.
The role is to support the detainee ensuring they understand their rights, the processes and to ensure they are treated properly and fairly.
To apply to be an appropriate adult with the Young Lives Foundation email volunteering@ylf.org.uk. Full training is given along with support.
