Platform

Only YouTube and Vimeo videos can be embedded on the Medway Council website.

Widgets

On the Medway Council website, videos on 'home page' templates must be embedded using the ‘embedded video’ widget.

Audio

For guidance on creating accessible sound see the WCAG guidelines on audio content.

Captions and transcripts

To comply with basic accessibility standards captions must be available for the user.

You should put the YouTube generated transcription in the video description. This will help disabled users and will also mean your video is more easily found on YouTube’s search.

Size

Videos must not be any smaller than 50% width on a page to ensure the control labels, such as the play buttons, are big enough to see.

Colour

Any text used on video must have a minimum of AA contrast ratio.

You can test your text and background colours at WebAim contrast ratio tool.

Text

The font for any text used within the video must be legible. Sans serif fonts are recommended.

Avoid thin and intricate font styles.

All text must be 18px or larger.

Animation

Fast and flashing animation must be avoided.

View W3C guidance on making audio and video accessible.

Summaries

If the video does not have audio and there is visual content only you should:

  • narrate your video
  • create a written summary of the contents of the video.

For YouTube and Vimeo videos, this can be placed in the description of the video, or if adding to a website be added next to or before the video.
