People rely on our roads to get to work, school and deliver goods and services, so we're investing in our network to help keep Medway moving safely.

We're implementing red routes on some roads in Medway to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow. View the red route locations.

We're working towards implementing the red routes on Monday 20 May 2024. Find out more about next steps.

What a red route is

A red route will have double red lines along the kerb. It will also have signs on and around the road.

On a red route motorists cannot:

  • stop
  • park
  • load or unload.

Motorists can still stop and park in formal parking or loading bays on roads where red routes are used.

Why we're implementing red routes

Less congestion should result in fewer delays for motorists and for services like public buses. It can also help to reduce emissions and impact on air quality locally.

Red routes also help stop illegal and unsafe parking to create a safer network for all road users.

This programme will help us to meet our:

  • Environment Strategy
  • Sustainable Transport Strategy
  • Local Transport Plan.

Next steps

We're working towards launching our red routes on Monday 20 May 2024.

Over the coming weeks, we will install:

  • double red lines on the roads
  • 5 extra loading bays (included in the designs based on community feedback)
  • ANPR cameras and signage.

Drivers may experience the following disruption during these works:

  • reduced speed on Corporation Street, Star Hill, Best Street, The Brook, and A2 Rainham High Street to help keep workers and drivers safe
  • some noise from construction
  • some night works between Saturday 4 May and Friday 10 May 2024 while we complete line marking.

You should give yourself extra time when travelling due to potential delays.

We'll update residents and businesses impacted by the works as they progress.
