The natural parents of a child must re-register a birth if they have got married or formed a civil partnership.

You can re-register a birth at any time.

How to re-register a birth

To re-register a birth, you'll need to download and complete a LA1 form.

You'll then need to visit Medway Register Office and take your:

  • completed LA1 form
  • marriage certificate
  • child's birth certificate.

The register office will then complete their checks, and aim to contact you within 2 working days to book an appointment to complete the re-registration.

What happens at the appointment

The appointment will take around 30 minutes and will be similar to the original birth registration.

After the appointment, the official records are updated.

Any birth certificates made after this will show the re-registration details.

You can buy a new certificate at the appointment, which will be posted to you or can be collected from Medway Register Office.
