Reasons for family relationship breakdowns

Our commitment is to keep families together wherever possible, as long as it is:

  • safe to do so
  • in the best interest of the child.

Why family relationships breakdown

Breakdowns in family relationships are the main cause of youth homelessness. Relationships can break down for many reasons including:

  • financial difficulties
  • overcrowding
  • violence
  • physical and mental health
  • not following rules
  • criminal activities.

Moving out is not the only option available.

Things that could help repair breakdowns

If family relationships are breaking down, there are things that can help. For example, you can:

  • talk it through, but pick your moments
  • get support from someone else
  • get help from a mediation service
  • talk with the young person to agree a behavioural contract with jointly agreed rules.
