Harassment from landlord or agents

It is a criminal offence for a landlord to harass you about leaving a property.

Even if you're behind on rent payments, they should not harass you. They should not get others to harass you on their behalf either.

Examples of harassment

Behaviour that can be classed as harassment includes:

  • threatening to change the locks
  • entering your home without permission
  • violence or intimidating language or behaviour
  • pressuring you to move out before the end of your tenancy
  • cutting off utilities like water to your property
  • making demands for money that you do not owe.

If you're being harassed

You need to:

  • keep a record of what has happened and what has been said
  • report the landlord to us
  • contact our homelessness team to get help with your landlord, or find you somewhere else to live
  • report the landlord's behaviour to the police by calling 101. The police may not investigate if there's no violence involved. If there has been violence or a threat call 999
