If you're living in an overcrowded home
It's a criminal offence to cause or allow overcrowding.
There are rules that define when a home is overcrowded. The rules look at:
- the size of the home and number of rooms that count as a bedroom
- how many people are living there
- the age and sex of the people living there.
Based on these rules, we'll decide if you live in an overcrowded home.
We can use our powers as a housing authority to stop overcrowding and take legal action against a person responsible for it.
In exceptional circumstances we can allow overcrowding for a temporary amount of time. For example, if a family is in the process of being rehoused.
What you can do
If you think you're living in an overcrowded home you can contact the homelessness team for help.
If we assess your home and decide that it's not overcrowded, you can ask for a review. You'll be able to request a review from the details on your decision letter.
