Choosing school preferences
Medway residents can list up to 6 school preferences when you apply for school places.
Before you apply, you should:
- find out more about secondary schools in Medway including open day dates
- read each school’s admission arrangements to find out how places are offered
- check a school's Ofsted report
- check how your child will get to school
- if you want to apply for home to school transport you can ask for a list of the nearest qualifying schools from your home address.
Admission tests - grammar schools
If your child wants to go to a Medway grammar school, they must do the Medway Test (11+).
Only those who are assessed as grammar (achieve the minimum score required) can be considered for Medway grammar school places.
Chatham Grammar school also includes the Kent Test in their admissions arrangements, so your child is eligible for consideration for that school if they are assessed as suitable for grammar school through the Medway and/or Kent Test and you apply for the school.
If you want to be considered for grammar schools outside of Medway, your child will need to sit the relevant test for those schools. The results of the Medway Test are not transferrable to schools outside of Medway.
Admission tests - fair banding
All applicants applying for Brompton Academy must sit a Fair Banding Test. If you would like to apply for Brompton Academy, visit their website to find out when the test takes place and how to register for it.
Some schools outside of Medway also have a Fair Banding Test as part of their admissions process. Make sure you read the admissions policies for the schools you want to apply for to check if your child needs to do a banding test.
