Medway Council provides a competitive pay package for all social work roles in Children’s Services:

  • Newly qualified social worker (points 1 to 2): £30,365 increasing to £31,391 per annum after 6 months
  • Social worker (points 3 to 8): £33,898 to £37,055 per annum
  • Experienced social worker (points 9 to 14): £37,056 to £40,567 per annum
  • Senior Practitioner (points 15 to 20): £40,568 to £45,376 per annum
  • Team manager (points 21 to 26): £45,377 to £49,437 per annum
  • Service manager (points 27 to 32): £49,437 to £53,524 per annum.

Incremental progression is subject to employees being assessed as 'achieving' or above as part of their annual performance development review.

Retention payment

An annual retention payment of £2,000 or £3,000 is payable on all social work roles.

To qualify for the retention payment, social workers:

  • need to have accrued a minimum of one or 2 years’ service (dependent upon team) as of 31 March
  • need to be in post as of 31 March
  • must not have resigned before the payment is made
  • must be at performance level 'achieving' or above
  • must not be subject to a formal disciplinary or capability process during the year.

These payments are reviewed each year. If they are discontinued, staff will be given 3 months’ notice.

Market supplement

Some of our social work roles also attract a market supplement payment. This will be shown on the job advert. 

The following roles currently attract a market supplement payment:

  • Social worker: £2,000 per annum
  • Experienced social worker: £2,500 per annum
  • Senior practitioner: £3,000 per annum
  • Team manager: £4,000 per annum
  • Service manager: £7,000 per annum.

These payments are reviewed each year and may be withdrawn if market conditions improve. If the market supplement is withdrawn, staff will be given 3 months’ notice.

The market supplement is paid in 12 equal payments each year.
