View Medway Tickets Live website

Project aims and objectives

The aims and objectives of the Medway Tickets Live project were to:

  • redesign the website, to give it a modern design and feel
  • make it mobile and tablet responsive
  • make it easier to find events and book tickets

During this work we kept in mind how we could incorporate wider opportunities in future. For example, there is the potential to add more than just entertainment events, such as accommodation and venue listings for Medway.

“New website looks great – much more user-friendly on a mobile.”
Jeni B, Facebook

“New website seems easier to use on my phone, so that’s good news. Also hoping to use my tickets for Jason Manford in September.”
Kelly D, Facebook

What we did

Project stages included:

Usability testing

We asked users to test the new website at Medway's libraries and community hubs. This involved local residents and people unfamiliar with Medway.

Analytical and discovery work

Website analytics and heat maps were used to look for ways to improve the user experience. This helped to inform our design decisions.

Progress meetings

Meetings were held between our team, the service and a developer from an external agency. This gave everyone an opportunity to discuss ideas and issues, as well as report on progress.

Website build and design

The new website was built by the developer using Jadu, which is the main platform used by us.

The design work was completed by the Digital team. This included sourcing and treating the event imagery to work with the new responsive design, and implementing a ‘pull-through’ to related events which could increase sales.

Content design and editing

We also worked on some of the content for the website.

Event web page content was not written by us. This is controlled by a different system, called Spectrix, which feeds in event information from promoters.

The content we worked on included:

  • header text, such as the search bar, icons and menu
  • the menu pages, such as ‘What’s on’, ‘How to book tickets’ and ‘Coronavirus (COVID-19) information'
  • the 'more information' box that appears on each events page
  • footer text and footer pages, such as ‘Accessibility’ and ‘Terms and conditions’.

A big focus for the content was the user journey. We ensured there were appropriate cross-links between the pages, content was in plain English, and unnecessary pages were removed.

Go-live

Once all tasks had been completed, the website was launched and tested.

Mobile responsive

One of the main aims of this project was to make the website mobile responsive. We did this by:

  • making the website more accessible
  • treating images to fit better with the website
  • working with the service to remove text on images. Where this could not be done, we replicated image text and live text.

Measure of success

Due to coronavirus (COVID-19), events have been cancelled and postponed since March 2020.

Any data that compares ticket sales from the old website and new website would therefore be misrepresented.

We will provide our measures of success at a later date.
