Moving home

You'll need to register for Council Tax if you’ve moved to the area or you’re liable to pay Council Tax at a Medway address for the first time.

If you've received a Council Tax bill in your name for the property, you're already registered for Council Tax.

If you or a tenant are moving address, or you’ve bought or sold a property in the Medway area, you need to tell us so we can update your Council Tax details.

Tell us you've moved home

You'll need to notify us if you’re:

  • moving within Medway
  • moving into Medway
  • moving out of Medway.

We'll need to know:

  • the name of the people moving
  • the addresses you’re moving into or out of
  • the tenancy start or property purchase date
  • the tenancy end or property sale date
  • the date you move
  • previous resident’s contact information, if known.

What happens next

We’ll process your move notification as quickly as possible, and you’ll be sent a Council Tax bill showing your balance.

If you opt for paperless billing, we’ll email you when you can view your bill using a My Council Tax Online account.

If your account is in credit when you move:

  • any payments you made by Direct Debit will be either refunded or transferred to your new Medway Council Tax bill
  • you can request a Council Tax refund for amounts not paid by Direct Debit.

You'll need to register to vote at your new address. 

If you're claiming Housing Benefit or Council Tax Reduction you'll also need to update your claim.

You'll need to re-apply for any reductions you’re eligible for, or if your circumstances have changed, you may be eligible for a reduction you did not receive before.

Landlords and agents

You need to let us know when a tenant moves in or out of a property so we can bill the correct person. If there’s a gap in a tenancy then you’ll have to pay for the period in between.

We'll need to know the:

  • full name of your tenants
  • tenancy address
  • tenancy start or end date
  • date they moved in or out
  • where they have moved to or from, if known.
