Overview
In Medway, we’re dedicated to offering accessible facilities and sporting opportunities for people with disabilities and special educational needs.
We host a range of national and international disability sports so there is always the chance to get active in Medway.
We offer:
- Inclusive Fitness Initiative (IFI) gym memberships
- hosting of international and national disability events
- accessible centres and facilities
- support for local clubs to encourage inclusivity
- PE and School Sport events with our disability youth games series.
Disability sports clubs and sessions
There are a wide variety of disability sports on offer in Medway, as well as many new and existing clubs offering sports for disabled people of all levels and abilities.

Disability Youth Games
The Disability Youth Games are a funded series of events and fun based sports galas and tournaments available to all Medway special schools and units.

Medway Sport swimming lessons
The Alpha Step Awards are designed to build confidence in those who may need more support during their swimming lessons.
They are particularly good for:
- a shy or timid child
- a nervous adult
- some people with special educational needs or disabilities (SEND).

Multi-sport club
Medway Sport's multi-sport disability club at Medway Park gives people of any ability or level of disability a chance to have fun and try different sports.
Session information:
- Monday 5.30pm to 7pm
- suitable for adults and older children
- you do not need to book.
The price is £3.30 per session. No charge for carers.

Fun disability swim sessions
The disability swim session is held in the hydrotherapy pool at Strood Leisure Centre and is for all swimming abilities and levels of disability.
The warm water will help with mobility and is the perfect environment to get active. This session is for children and adults aged 12 and over.
The session takes place on Thursdays, 6pm to 7pm.
The first session is free and then it is £3.45 per session. No charge for parents or carers.
You must book sessions in advance online or by phone 01634 333 933.
Sensory swim sessions
The sensory swim session is held in the hydrotherapy pool at Strood Leisure Centre and is for all swimming abilities and levels of disability.
This session is for children aged 3 to 12 years.
Activities include:
- general splash around
- water based games
- building water confidence
The session is held every Thursday 4.30pm to 5.30pm.
The price is £4.40 per session. There is no charge for parents or carers.

Other sports and sports clubs for people with disabilities
There are also a range of disability sports available through community sports clubs in Medway. These include:
- boccia
- disability athletics
- football
- gymnastics
- rugby league
- tennis
- trampolining
- walking sports such as walking football and Walk n Talk
- wheelchair sports.
Dance and Arts
There are a number of Medway Clubs and organisations that offer opportunities to encourage active lifestyles through dance and performance arts. These include:

We are incredibly proud that Medway Park Sports Centre is the home of the England Wheelchair Rugby League.
