Looked-after children

We work hard to support families to help them care for their children at home. If this is not possible, we try to find family members or friends who can provide safe, nurturing and positive care for children throughout their childhood and into adulthood.

If this is not possible, we will find the best possible placement for a young person which could be with adopters, foster carers or residential care.

We listen to young people and their experiences of being looked after by Medway. Our Challengers group and the Children in Care Council are an enthusiastic and powerful voice representing looked after young people in Medway.

Looked-after children placed in Medway by other local councils

Children that are placed in Medway by other local councils will have access to support from the council that placed them.

We can provide advice about looked-after children placed in Medway by other local councils.

Notify us of a child being placed in Medway

We keep a register of looked-after children in Medway.

If a looked-after child is placed, moved or discharged from a placement by a local council into another local council, the council needs to be notified.

Read our letter of a child placement notification to find out how to notify us.
