Social housing

Social or council housing is a flat or house that you can rent from a social landlord or local council. Social housing is usually a cheaper alternative to private accommodation.

You can register for social housing in Medway from the age of 17.

This means that you can express an interest in housing. You'll be added to the housing register (waiting list) and given a banding. You'll be assessed by priority of need and your banding will depend on your circumstances.

Banding criteria

Band B

Band B is for care leavers who are ready to live independently.

After a joint assessment between us and Leaving Care Service, you'll be eligible to join our housing register.

The assessment will need to show that you've engaged with professionals to prepare yourself for independent living. This will be shown in your Pathway Plan. Your Pathway Plan should also include support to assist your transition to independent living.

Your referral will not be accepted if you have issues including rent arrears or antisocial behaviour.

If you've applied for homeless assistance, we will not be able to accept your referral.

Band C

Band C is for care leavers who are eligible to join the housing register but have not been assessed by us and the Care Leavers Service.

This includes care leavers who are under 21 years old and have lived outside of Medway for at least 2 years.

Information about the banding criteria for social housing can be found in the Strategic Housing Allocations Policy.
