Building conservation

Medway is rich in historic buildings and areas. There are over 700 listed buildings, ranging from castles and Rochester Cathedral to fine medieval and Georgian houses. There are also 24 conservation areas, which give protected status to areas such as the Historic Dockyard at Chatham, the centre of Rochester, rural village centres and areas of fine Victorian and Edwardian housing.

Chatham Dockyard and its Defences (including Fort Amherst, the Great Lines Heritage Park and Upnor Castle) are of international significance. The Historic Dockyard contains the highest concentration of listed buildings and scheduled monuments of anywhere in the country.

Medway Council’s Planning Team can provide information and advice about listed buildings and conservation areas in Medway including:

  • whether a building is listed or in a conservation area
  • repairs
  • internal and external alterations
  • whether listed building consent is needed for building work
  • advice on the design aspects of new buildings in conservation areas.
