Child missing from education

Each year a number of children either fail to start in a new school, become lost from school rolls or fail to re-register at a new school when they move into the Medway area.

These ‘missing’ children (age 5 -16) can be amongst the most vulnerable and it is important they are brought back into appropriate education as quickly as possible.

In some cases, there is a reason why a child is not attending school. He or she might be taught at home  or may have a problem such as school phobia, but it is important we identify these children and find out why.

Report a child suspected to be missing from education
Your personal details will be kept anonymous. Include the child's:

  • Name
  • Sex
  • Date of birth
  • Address
  • Parent/guardian details if known.

What happens after a report is made?

After a report is received we will carry out checks using various databases held at Medway Council. If, following these checks, we are satisfied appropriate education is being provided, we will take no further action and the case will be closed.

If we do not hold information about the child, we will contact the parents or carers to find out what education they provide. If we are not satisfied with the response, an officer will make a home visit and arrangements for appropriate education will be put into place.
